Which game
Bingo, with the letter column on every ball
Balls per call
One at a time for bingo. Six at once for a lottery draw.
The called board
The board keeps every number called this game, so a player who missed one can look it up instead of stopping the room. It survives a refresh.
Sound
A rattle as the ball comes up and a bell when it lands. The number is on screen and read out to a screen reader at the same moment, so sound is never the only way to hear a call.
The caller our printed tickets never had
This site has printed bingo cards and ninety ball tickets for a long time, and every one of them needed somebody with a bag of counters to call the numbers. This is that person. Choose the game, press the button, and the machine calls a number that has not been called yet.
A 75 ball game puts the letter on the ball, because the tickets are laid out in five lettered columns of fifteen and a call without its letter makes players search the whole card. A 90 ball game does not, because housie tickets are laid out in tens and the letter would be a number nobody is looking for.
The board is the part that saves the room
Every game has the moment when somebody asks whether 47 has gone. With counters on a table the answer takes a minute and the room waits. Here the board shows every number in the game with the called ones struck through and the most recent one highlighted, so the answer takes a glance and the game keeps moving.
The board lives in this browser, which means a refresh in the middle of a game does not end the game. Close the tab by accident, open it again, and the called numbers are still there. It also means a second device does not share the game: one machine calls, and the room listens, which is how a hall does it anyway.
A lottery draw, and what it is not
Set it to six balls a call and 1 to 49 and it is the draw everybody pictures: six numbers, no repeats, out of the machine together. It is useful for choosing six of anything, and it is a good way to show a class what a one in fourteen million chance looks like from the inside.
There are no stakes here. Nothing is wagered, nothing of value is won, and no result on this page is connected to any real draw anywhere. It is a party mechanic and a classroom prop, and if you want one where the odds are visibly uneven instead, the peg board is the one to use.
Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for
The tool runs entirely in your browser. There is no account, nothing you make is uploaded, and nothing you type is sent anywhere or put into a link.
The page itself is not silent, though: it carries advertising code and a visit counter that sets no cookie, and the cookie page says exactly what each of those does.
There are no stakes here. Nothing is wagered, nothing of value is won, and the draw is a party mechanic, not a lottery.
This page remembers your settings in your browser under pph.lotto.preset, pph.lotto.range, pph.lotto.called, pph.lotto.count, pph.lotto.board, pph.lotto.big and pph.lotto.muted, and nowhere else. Clearing your site data for papercarnival.com removes it.
Questions
- Can I use this to call a bingo game?
- Yes, and that is what the 1 to 75 setting is for. Every ball comes up with its letter column, so you call B 7 and I 24 the way the tickets expect, and the board keeps every number already called for the player who missed one. For ninety ball housie, choose 1 to 90 and the letters go away, because housie tickets do not use them.
- Does it remember the numbers already called?
- Yes. The called numbers are kept in this browser, so a refresh, a locked screen or a closed tab does not lose the game. They stay on the device and are never sent anywhere. Reset the game to put every ball back.
- Is the draw actually random?
- Every ball is chosen with the browser's cryptographic random number generator before the animation starts, from the balls that are still in the machine, so nothing can repeat and nothing is weighted. The blower is a picture of a draw that has already happened.
- How fast should I call?
- Slower than feels right. Most callers give the room about five seconds between balls, repeat the number once, and say the letter first for a 75 ball game. The board on screen means you can go faster with an experienced room and still let anybody catch up.
