A hint marks the tile a word you have not found starts on, and tells you how long it is. Three per grid.

The rules, in full
Every word is a chain of touching tiles. Two tiles touch if they sit side by side, one above the other, or corner to corner, so a word can turn as often as it likes on its way across the grid. No tile may be used twice in the same word, and nothing shorter than four letters counts. Drag your finger or the mouse through the letters, tap them one at a time and tap the last one again to enter, or ignore the grid altogether and type the word.
Scoring and the ladder
Four letters is worth one point. From five letters up, a word scores a point for every letter it uses, and any word of seven letters or more takes seven bonus points as well, which is why the long ones are worth hunting for rather than sweeping up the short ones. The ladder runs Beginner, Good start, Moving up, Good, Solid, Nice, Great, Amazing, Genius, and Genius sits at seventy per cent of everything the grid holds. Clearing the board outright earns the last rung, and plenty of grids are never cleared at all.
Hints, timers and streaks
Three hints come with every grid. A hint marks the tile that a word you have missed begins on and tells you how many letters it runs to, which is usually enough to unstick a corner without handing you the answer. The timer is switched off unless you ask for it: three, five or ten minutes, and when it runs out the grid locks so your score stands. Your streak counts the days you reach Genius on the daily grid, and it lives in this browser only, with no account behind it.
Where the words come from
Each grid is solved in advance against a public-domain English word list, then checked so that every tile earns its place in at least one scoring word and no grid is a dead end. The scoring list sticks to words people actually use. Rarer ones are still recognised as bonus words, so being right about a word nobody else knows is at least acknowledged, but you never need one to finish. Anything crude is taken out before a grid is ever dealt, which is what makes this one safe to put on a classroom board.
More to play and print
For the same letters on paper, the word search maker hides your own list in a grid and the crossword maker weaves it into a numbered puzzle, both with answer keys. Everything else, from bingo to the countdown timer, is free on the tools page.
