New Year is nearly all waiting. The food is early, midnight is late, and the hours in between are the hardest part of the night for anybody under ten. A word search shaped like a star covers a piece of that, and it looks like the occasion rather than like homework.

The grid is a real five pointed star: the points are drawn exactly, the letters stop at the edges, and the words hide inside. Twenty four of them, because the points are too narrow to hide much in, so the list stays on fireworks, the countdown, and the fresh start.

It also does a good job of the first lesson back, while the register and the lost jumpers get sorted out.

Ways to use it

The long wait to midnight

The stretch after dinner is the hardest part of the night for anybody under ten. This covers a chunk of it.

First day back

A settled first lesson of the new term, while the register and the lost jumpers get sorted out.

Party table filler

One at each place setting, so nobody is standing around waiting for the food to come out.

Timed round

Count down ten minutes, like the last ten before midnight, and whoever has found the most inside the star when it runs out wins.

Questions

Why are there only twenty four words?

A star is mostly points, and the points are too narrow to hide long words in. Twenty four fit, every one of them placed.

Will it print well in the dark theme?

Yes, though it uses more ink. Open it in the generator and switch to a lighter style if you are printing a class set.
